It's summertime, let’s give our pets some much needed TLC this season. As much as it warms our hearts to see them enjoying the outdoors, it's important to know that the warm weather can sometimes be harsh for them. Here are 5 summer wellness tips to help you enjoy walks, hikes and beach days with your fur baby while keeping them safe and healthy.

1. Access to Fresh Drinking Water and Plenty Of Shade

Dehydration in dogs is a real possibility. Always ensure your pets have access to clean water and shade whenever they go outside, even if it's for a little while. Also, refill their water bowls more frequently and always carry water wherever you go.

Got a picky drinker? Try adding a tiny splash of bone broth to encourage them to drink more.

If your dog loves to sunbathe, encourage them to get into the shade every half hour or so to cool themselves down. It's also a good idea to go out in the mornings and evenings when it's relatively cooler.

It is critical to know the symptoms of dehydration in dogs to be able to identify and treat them ASAP!

Dehydrated dogs usually:

  • Pant heavily
  • Have dry gums
  • Drool excessively
  • Have wobbly legs
  • Display lethargy

If your doggo shows any of these symptoms, rush to the vet immediately.

2. Avoid Extreme Heat Exposure

Did you know that in only 2 minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle can jump from 80 to 120 degrees? So no, it's not just a quick run into the store. No, you can't keep the window down and leave them. Dog safety is more critical than that.

3. Protect Their Itty Bitty Paws

The sun can cause surfaces made from wood, concrete, metal and loose gravel to become really hot. These hot surfaces can burn your pet’s smushy paw pads and cause painful blisters. We recommend testing the surface by placing your hand upon it. If it's too hot for you, it's also too hot for your pet’s paws.

After a hot day, make sure you use a healing balm on your fur baby’s paws. It provides instant relief, hydration and moisturizes dry or cracked paw pads almost instantly.

4. Make Sure Your Pet is Free Of Parasites Such As Fleas And Ticks

One of the few annoying things about summer is the increase in fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Keep your little buddy from getting infested with pesky creatures. They can carry diseases that affect them and you. This is precisely why flea and tick prevention for dogs is essential.

All-natural flea and ticks spray works wonders repelling mosquitoes and killing fleas, flea eggs and ticks on contact. You can use it directly on your pet age 12 weeks or older, as well as on their beddings and anything they come in contact with.

5. Dogs Can Swim, But Not All Of Them Are Michael Phelps

Although dogs can swim, you can never leave them unattended. It's critical to keep a close eye on them while they indulge in water activities, even if you think they know what they're doing.

Last but not least, the most important tip we'll give you is simply pay attention to any signs of discomfort and quickly cater to them. If you have any other questions or concerns regarding your doggo's health during the summer months, consult your vet.

If you follow these simple tips, you can surely look forward to the exciting adventures that await you and your furry best friend this summer! Oh, and don't forget to shower them with lots of yummy treats and kisses!

Summer days are made better by being at our furry baby’s side!
